2017 Semper Ubi Sub Ubi Team Preview

Billy Hamilton (Cin-OF)
Summary: While Semper Ubi Sub Ubi (SUSU) remains a contender it will have to likely rely on veteran players as it waits on young players to get seasoned and major league ready. Still, this team has it lightning in a bottle before.

Offense: Other than Jose Altuve (Hou-2B), SUSU's bats might not have anymore elite stars but it does have some young players that could grow into that role. Veterans Jay Bruce (NYM-OF) and three bagger Evan Longoria (TB-3B) are likely the next closest thing this team has to be sure things other than the fact that Billy Hamilton (Cin-OF) will run and run fast so steals won't be a problem. Yasmani Grandal (LAD-C) finally had his breakout year and world champ Ben Zobrist (ChC-2B,OF) who lost some position eligibility and former world champ Brandon Belt (SF-1B) actually seems better than he showed in 2016. Something to look forward to is a healthy JD Martinez (Det-OF), Jorge Soler (KC-OF) who is slated to finally get full-time work, and Andrew Benintendti (Bos-OF) who many consider to be the top overall prospect in the game. After that, things get young with Clint Frazier (NYY-OF) on a new team with a new hair cut, Reimel Tapia (Col-OF) who got his cup of coffee in 2016, Ozhaino Albies (Atl-SS) who is being groomed for the 2B job in Atlanta, Michael Conforto (NYM-OF) whose sophomore year wasn't quite what he expected while heavy bat prospects Austin Riley (Atl-3B) and Garrett Whitley (TB-OF) get more reps on the farm. SUSU will need to add a full-time shortstop but it is building in the right direction and could be a potent sect very soon.

Pitching: Unquestionably, the best arm here belongs to Madison Bumgarner (SF-SP) but he can't do it alone which leads to Chris Archer (TB-SP) Kenta Meada (LAD-SP) and Aaron Nola (Phi-SP) who all averaged more than a K per inning.  Next up is Jake Odorizzi (TB-SP) and Tanner Roark (Was-SP) who can be very good but not elite. Rule-5 pick Tyson Ross (Tex-SP) though can be elite at times and youngster Tyler Glasnow (Pit-SP) has been labeled that for years. The starters are little top heavy and will need to some help from its effective bullpen Kenley Janson (LAD-RP), Mark Melancon (SF-RP), Edwar Diaz (Sea-RP), and Alex Colome (TB-RP). Lots of saves and Ks coming from this group but this team might need some more fine tuning throughout the season.

Draft: SUSU will need to bide its time as it waits for its fine young players to join its ranks in the majors which might push them to add some play now players. The most intriguing player here looks to be Ryon Healy (Oak-3B) as SUSU might find a Mark Trumbo clone with a little more refinement.

Prediction:
RD 1: Ryon Healy (Oak - 3B) - Big bopper was dynamite in only 82 ABs
RD 2: Albert Pujols (LAA - 1B) - Hit 31HRs and 119 RBIs at age 36, good when healthy
RD 3: Fernando Rodney (Ari - RP) - Hate him, love him he'll close wherever he goes
RD 4: Tyson Ross (Tex - SP) - Rule-5 Draft
RD 5: Austin Riley (sophomore - 3B) - Keeper
RD 6: Garrett Whitley (TB - OF) - Keeper

Prospect Draft:
RD 1: Caven Biggio (Tor - 2B)
RD 2: Bobby Dalbec (Bos - 3B)
RD 3: Leonardo Crawford (LAD - SP)

2017 Jackie Treehorn Team Preview

Andrew Miller (Cle-RP)

Summary: Jackie Treehorn (JT) is probably the start of potential contenders for the league as the offense certainly looks capable while the starters are good but will likely not be enough so look for this team to acquire some arms and fast.

Offense: JT's bats posses probably enough potency to challenge anyone in the league being led by field general Buster Posey (SF-C), the uber powerful Jose Abreu (ChW-1B) and the eventual world-beater Kyle Seager (Sea-3B). Team those 3 legit MVP candidates up with Cuban All-Star Aledmys Diaz (Stl-SS), AL Champs Mike Napoli (Tex-1B) / Jason Kipnis (Cle-2B), Rule-5 power pick Mark Trumbo (Bal-OF) and former WS Champ hitman Eric Hosmer (KC-1B) then you really have something. In fact, the more you look you realize just how contributing players this team has including the Cardinals trio of Matt Carpenter (Stl-3B,2B,1B), Stephen Piscotty (Stl-OF) and Randall Grichuk (Stl-OF) to go along with Carlos Gomez (Tex-OF), Starlin Castro (NYY-SS) and Cole Kalhoun (LAA-OF). Dark horse Keon Broxton (Mil-OF) and the lackluster Eder Inciarte (Atl-OF) look to be the only possible weaknesses with prospect Lucious Fox (TB-SS) still developing on the farm but that is nitpicking. Nice group.

Pitching: Dealing with the other side of the extreme, since JT's offese is so complete its pitching leaves something to be desired with oft-injured ace Adam Wainright (Stl-SP) attempting to get back in the grove along with Carlos Carrasco (Cle-SP) who was out with injury during last season's MLB post season. Perhaps Jeff Samardzija (SF-SP) and possibly Gerrit Cole (Pit-SP) can harness their talents to rise to the next level and motivate David Phelps to do the same? Maybe not but the team's 3 late inning relievers will be a weapon to use throughout the season. The quality of arms here isn't bad there just likely isn't enough to compete with the big boys so maybe giving up some offense for some arms would be smart.
Draft: Adding quality pitching should be a paramount priority to this team and Puk presents an excellent way to get a college arm with more upside than most pitchers his age.

Prediction:
RD 1: A.J. Puk (Oak - SP) - Big tall lefty with some concerns has excelled so far
RD 2: Brandon Maurer (SD - RP) - Settled in as Padres closer with good numbers
RD 3: Joaquin Benoit (Phi - RP) - May close for Phillies and then be dealt at deadline
RD 4: Mike Trumbo (Bal - 1B,OF) - Rule-5
RD 5: Ian Happ (ChC - 2B) - Keeper
RD 6: Lucious Fox (TB - SS) - Keeper

Prospect Draft:
RD 1: CJ Chatham (Bos - SS)
RD 2: Jae-Gyun Hwang (SF - 3B)
RD 3: Adam Walker (Atl - OF) - Keeper

2017 Hair of the Dog Fred Team Preview

D.J. LeMahieu (Col-2B)
Summary: Hair of the Dog Fred (HOTDF) remains one of the most active teams in the league as it looks to plug and chug positions. While it might lack the big young bat everyone searches for, it might have enough veteran bats to do the job to team with its talented pitching staff and pen.

Offense: An off season trade recently netted HOTDF future HOFer Miguel Cabrera (Det-1B) and though he's not as good as he once was he's still capable of producing stud numbers. Speaking of stud numbers, that is what Todd Frazier (ChW-3B,1B) would be capable if he can get his AVG up and stay healthy where the latter has been a problem for fellow outfielders David Peralta (Ari-OF) as well as dual threat AJ Pollack (Ari-OF) who will look to do better than 20/20 Melvin Upton (Det-OF). Interestingly enough, this team had the top 2 NL batting title finishers from DJ LeMahieu (Col-2B) and Daniel Murphy (Was-2B) though it might be hard for both to repeat last season. Additional infielders Logan Forsythe (LAD-2B) who is now in the NL, the oft-injured yet valuable Kevin Pillar (Tor-1B), the powerful Brandon Moss (Oak-1B,OF) and Japanese import Jung Ho Kang (Pit-3B) who may face sanctions resulting form a DUI charge are all capable of bettering their prior seasons. The once versatile Martin Prado (Mia-3B) looks out of place with his lack of power and the one dimensional Rajai Davis (Oak-OF) looks to be mostly used for steals. Prospect outfielder Bradley Zimmer (Cle-OF) is on the verge while shortstop prospect (Orlando Arcia (Mil-SS) looks to have untapped potential on the horizon and teaming with Rule-5 pick Amed Rosario (NYM-SS) looks smart. Adding a catcher will be a requirement for HOTDF and finding a legit 3B prospect will be a key. For an offense that usually lacks star power, can the additions of MCab and healthy seasons from some vets get this team over the hump? The possibility of playing lefty/righty matchups might be a possible strategy since much of the offensive numbers could be interchangeable.

Pitching: HOTDF's pitching rotation is actually quite talented with reigning AL Cy Young winner Rock Porcello (Bos-SP) and hard thrower Michael Pineda (NYY-SP) who notched more than 200+ strikeouts in 2016. Teaming up with the above are Gio Gonzalez (Was-SP) and Jacob DeGrom (NYM-SP) as both average about a strikeout per inning.  Finishing out HOTDF's rotation is the underrated Jose Quintana (LAA-SP), who other than wins had similar numbers to Porcello. Youngster James Taillon (Pit-SP) got his feet wet last season with mized results and Kolby Allard (Atl-SP) looks like a legit prospect moving forward. Another strength of this team is its bullpen with closer Zach Britton (Bal-RP) though Dellin Betances (NYY-RP), Tyler Thornberg (Bos-RP) and Ryan Dull (Oak-RP) are all slated to start the season in setup duty which will likely limit save opportunities. Still, there is a lot to like here and this team as four legit top tier starters with four relievers capable of closing if all goes right.

Draft: More so than any other pick in the 1st round, does the selection of Stenzel here make the most sense. HOTDF isn't always the most patient team and betting on the University of Tennessee hot corner in an advantageous ballpark seems logical.

Prediction:
RD 1: Nick Stenzel (Cin - 3B) - Fast moving college bat on the verge at a thin position
RD 2: Neftali Feliz (Mil - RP) - Proved he can close a game once again if healthy
RD 3: Francisco Mejia (Cle - C) - One of the best prospect catchers in baseball
RD 4: Amed Rosario (NYM - SS) - Rule-5 Draft
RD 5: Kolby Allard (Atl - SP) - Keeper
RD 6: Josh Hader (Mil - SP) - Keeper

Prospect Draft:
RD 1: Luis Yander La O (Tex - 3B)
RD 2: Brandon Woodruff (Min - SP)
RD 3: Dustin Fowler (NYY - OF)

2017 Beer & Brat Brigade Team Preview

Gary Sanchez (NYY-C)
Summary: It seems like every year Beer and Brat Brigade (BBB) looks like a contender but always falls a little short.  Will this be the year? Maybe if everything falls right but one thing is for sure BBB will do it their way, right or wrong.

Offense: Something BBB always likes is a catcher and that is why the team has 3 worthy backstops with Gary Sanchez (NYY-C) leading the way with Wilson Ramos (TB-C) helping and Tom Murphy (Col-C) still with some questions. What isn't in question is the resurgence of Matt Kemp (Atl-OF) who led the team with 108 RBIs and fellow outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (NYM-OF) 30+ home run power. After that, you get a little less power but still nice production from former MVP Dustin Pedroia (Bos-2B), 20/20 Ian Desmond (Tex-OF), Joc Pederson (LAD-OF) who had a more consistent season 2016 Coors Field surprise Trevor Story (Col-SS) and Maikel Franco (Phi-3B) who has matured as a everyday producer. Youngster Devon Travis (Tor-2B) looks poised to be take the next step while prospect A.J. Reed (Hou-1B) might still be a big bopper and Casey Gillaspie (TB-1B) looks more powerful than his MLB brother. The team likely has 1 too many catchers but there is a lot to like with some worthwhile vet talent to lean as BBB continues to add to its ranks.

Pitching: Ace David Price (Bos-SP) will likely be excellent again in 2017 with the hopes that Jon Gray (Col-SP) and his overpowering stuff rises to the top while the same can be said for NL bound Taijuan Walker (Ari-SP). AL ROY Michael Fullmer (Det-SP) will look to continue his impressive resume while Jordan Zimmerman (Det-SP), Danny Salazar (Cle-SP) and Drew Smyly (Sea-SP) will hope for an injury free season. Youngsters Cody Reed (Cin-OF) and Corey Knebel (Mil-SP) remains intriguing assets though Tyler Beede (SF-SP) remains a valuable prospect. Adding to the staff is stud closer Aroldis Chapman (NYY-RP) and reliever Adam Ottavino (Col-RP), who looks to call short of being the Colorado closer to start the year. Still, this has the potential to be a strong group but there is always room for more production.

Draft: There will be some nice value in the 4th overall pick. Going with young valuable talent such as Moniak, Stenzel or Morejon might be the play here if available.

Prediction:
RD 1: Mickey Moniak (Phi - OF) - #1 pick in 2016 MLB draft, HS bat might take time
RD 2: Ryan Madson (Oak - EP) - In line for lots of saves in Oakland if healthy
RD 3: Nick Gordon (Min - SS) - A talented SS prospect with nice bloodlines
RD 4: Jerad Eickhoff (Phi - SP) - Rule-5 Pick
RD 5: Beau Burrows (Det - SP) - Keeper
RD 6: Justus Sheffield (NYY - SP) - Keeper

Prospect Draft:
RD 1: Bo Bichette (Tor - SS)
RD 2: Tyler Watson (Was - SP)
RD 3: Shedric Long (Cin - 2B)

2017 Wildcard Bluejays Team Preview

Marcus Stroman (Tor - SP)
Summary: The theme here should be build, build, build and that is what Wildcard Blue Jays (WB) has done. The team experienced some high points last season but will likely remain on the outside looking unless it's one hit wonders become everyday producers and its starters live up to their talents.

Offense: By the looks of things, it appears WB's young offense is finally beginning to produce with the chance for much more. It all starts with reigning NL MVP Kris Bryant (ChC-3B,1B,OF) who age 25 should only improve and will remain a foundation to build on. On the brink of super-stardom are the team's impressive duo of shortstops, Addison Russell (ChC-SS) and Francisco Lindor (Cle-SS), both of whom were champions from their respective leagues at age 23. Teaming up on the youth train is Cuban import Yoan Moncoda (ChW-3B) who many consider the #1 prospect in baseball even though he now finds himself on a new team. Veteran Adrian Beltre (Tex-3B) remains a productive talent as he nears age 38 and might be a nice trade target for a contender. 2016 All-Stars Jackie Bradley, Jr. (Bos-OF) and Adam Duvall (Cin-OF) surprised with their breakout seasons though will be pressed to repeat as both faded in the 2nd half. Mashers Jake Lamb (Ari-3B) and Khris Davis (Oak-OF) hit 71 homers between the two of them but also need refinement after striking out a combined 321 times. Former Mississippi State standout Hunter Renfroe (SD-OF) was excellent during his cup of coffee last season, Rule-5 pick Matt Wieters (Was-C) should once again be a capable backstop if healthy and Jorge Alfaro (Phi-C) should be a fine young backup in a hitters park. Prospects Brett Phillips (Mil-OF) and Austin Meadows (Pit-OF) should see time in the majors this season with legacy Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. (Tor-OF) getting seasoned in the minors. This offense features a lot to like with Bryant, Lindor and Russell as top talents with bats Bradley, Duvall, Lamb and Davis as currently inconsistent yet capable producers. Beltre will likely be shopped to add young talent but this team is building in the right direction.

Pitching: Coming off an All-Star season, many believed Sonny Gray (Oak-SP) and Dallas Keuchel (Hou-SP) would continue to improve but instead neither looked right and WB will need a big rebound from both. When it comes to stuff, few can compete with Carlos Rodon (ChW-SP), Jose Berrios (Min-SP) and Marcus Stroman (Tor-SP) though the results have yet to translate. Sadly, WB's most consistent starter was Marco Estrada who's results were still not up to snuff at 9-9. Prospect Blake Snell (TB-SP) premiered last season and will look to build while prospects Dillon Tate (Tex-SP), Kyle Freeland (Col-SP), and Vladimir Gutierrez (Cin-SP) all look worthwhile in the minors. Closers Roberto Osuna (Tor-RP) and Huston Street (LAA-RP) should be middle of the pack in save if Street can hold on to the job. WB's starters have lots of talent and should remain a hold as they are much better than they showed in 2016.

Draft: While the WB's team is fairly balanced it does lack certain star power especially in its starting rotation with the patience to develop some young talent.  So, expect this team to target the best player available with a slight lean on arms over bats during its 3 picks.

Prediction:
RD 1: Adrian Morejon (SD - SP) - Worth the wait as many consider him best prospect arm
RD 2: Tyer Jay (Min - SP) - Resurgence from last year to be expected from young arm
RD 3: Marcell Ozuna (Mia - OF) - Much better than most people believe and only age 26
RD 4: Matt Wieters (Was - C) - Rule-5
RD 5: Vladimir Gutierrez (Cin - SP) - Keeper
RD 6: Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. (Tor - OF) - Keeper

Prospect Draft:
RD 1: Patrick Weigel (Atl - SP)
RD 2: Eric Lauer (SD - SP)
RD 3: Randy Arozarena (Stl - SS)

2017 Chevy Chase Coopers Team Preview

Eduardo Nunez (SF - 3B)
Summary: While this will be a fun team to watch, it needs a lot more certainty in its production to be a contender at this point. Continuing to build for the future and selling older talents might be a course of action.

Offense: What really will hurt this team is losing David Ortiz, who led the team in homers and RBIs last season, as only Big Papi and 2016 Rule-5 draftee Hanley Ramirez (Bos-1B) hit for more than 100 RBIs last season. Ramirez is back but Ortiz is not which leaves veterans Brian mortgaging (Hou-C,1B) who is still a good backstop producer, Kendry Morales (KC-1B) who had a nice rebound season and infielder Justin Turner (LAD-3B) to pick up the slack in the power department. Willing to help out there will be the power bats of World Series hero Kyle Shawarber (ChC-C,OF), Miguel Sano (Min-3B,OF) who is capable of titanic blasts, Brad Miller (TB-SS,1B) as he surprised many with his 2016 output and Nomar Mazara (Tex-OF) who finally capitalized on his potential. All-around talents Eduardo Nunez (SF-3B) had 40 stolen bases while Steven Souza, Jr. (Was-OF) is capable of annual 20/20 seasons. Vet Jacoby Ellsbury (NYY-OF) might be rosterable as might Joe Panik (SF-2B) but both appear to be better reality than fantasy players. Possessing some of the best young infield captains in the game with Dansby Swanson (Atl-SS), Brendon Rodgers (Col-SS), and Franklin Barreto (Oak-SS) CCC's looks to be chopping at the bit to unload one or two at peak value for a haul. Teaming up with that talented trio should soon be Rafael Devers (Bos-3B) and David Dahl (Col-OF). It looks like CCC needs to continue to trip the fact by trying to add young capable players at all costs and eventually unload on of its dynamic shortstops.

Pitching: Led by Thor from the Avengers...I mean Noah Snydergaard (NYM-SP), CCC does have some capable arms but likely needs a little more sure things. Vets John Lackey (ChC - SP), Rich Hill (LAD-SP) and Scott Kazmir (LAD-S) will all play on a winners and provide nice stats though not overpowering. Julio Teharen (Atl-SP) and lefty Sean Manaea (KC-SP) posses some high upside while prospects Carson Fullmer (ChW- SP) and Taylor Guerrieri (TB-SP) have yet to be tested on a full-time basis though Mark Appel (Phi-SP) may see time in the majors this season.  Still, this is a top heavy rotation that would benefit from adding some high yield arms and maybe a young closer.

Draft: Yet to be a contender again, look for CCC to try and pick up young high upside talents wherever possible and forget about the wait. CCC could bide its time and find bonafide studs.

Prediction:
RD 1: Lourdes Gurriel (Tor - OF) - Cuban import has better physical tools than brother Yuli
RD 2: Riley Pint (Col - SP) - 2nd overall arm in 2016 draft, Coors provides discount
RD 3: Dakota Hudson (Stl - SP) - Big Mississippi State arm with high velocity
RD 4: Daz Cameron (Hou - OF) - Son of Mike Cameron could be worth the wait
RD 5: Kelvin Herrera (KC - RP) - Rule-5 selection
RD 6: Michael Kopech (ChW - SP) - Keeper

Prospect Draft:
RD 1: Hector Mendoza (FA - SP)
RD 2: Jake Cosart (Bos - SP)
RD 3: Anibal Sierra (Hou - SP)

2017 Dylon Spit Fiyah Team Preview

Rougned Odor (Tex - 2B)
Summary: Anytime a team finishes last in a league there is usually a reason. Mostly it boils down to the lack of attention of the manager, lack of talent or injuries. Even though this team is absent superstars in some areas it does have overall good players are some positions. This will be a make or break season for Dylon Spit Fiyah (DSF).

Offense: DSF's offense does not currently have any stud bats, maybe Charlie Blackmon (Col-OF), but it does have an ensemble of good bats with 5 players hitting 80 or more RBI's. The team is led by slugger (get it?) Rougned Odor (Tex-2B) whose combination of speed and power make him rare at his position. AL Champ Carlos Santana (Cle-1B) should continue his mashing ways while the once speedy Michael Saunders (Phi-OF) could find pay dirt in Philadelphia's friendly confines if healthy. Gregory Polanco (Pit-OF) possess 20/20 talent while the versatile Danny Valencia (Oak-3B,1B,OF) remains ever valuable on a team lacking depth. Infielders Mark Moustakas (KC-3B) and Brandon Crawford (SF-SS) continue to outpace projections season after season while veterans Matt Holiday (NYY-OF), Russell Martin (Tor-C) and Neil Walker (NYM-2B) should remain productive but likely belong on a contender rather than a rebuilder. Hope is on the way though with Aaron Judge (NYY-OF) and Gleyber Torres (NYY-2B) both poised to make an impact. Note bad talent all-around but likely lacks the star power needed to be a contender.

Pitching: Unlike its offense, DSF's staff does have stars with former Cy Young winner Kory Kluber and Japanese phenom Yu Darvish forming an excellent 1-2 punch. After that, Lucas Giolito (Was-SP) and Matt Harvey (NYM-SP) both possess top-notch stuff when healthy and the underrated Hector Santiago (Min-SP) helps fill out a nice #5 in the rotation. The staff also features sure things Mike Leake (Stl-SP) who plays on a good team, the consistently good Wei-Yen Chen (Mia-SP), Houston's true ace Collin McHugh (Hou-SP) and Francisco Liriano (Tor-SP) whose move to the AL may not bode well. After that, the medical ward gets notice as Cardinals Lance Lynn (Stl-SP) is coming back from TJ Surgery while Jamie Garcia (Stl-SP) is usually nursing some but he looks unblocked in St. Louis. to start the year. Prospect flamethrower Michael Kopech (ChW-SP) could be on the horizon soon.  Closing it for DSF will be David Robertson (ChW-RP) and reliever David Hernandez (Phi-RP) who may see time in the 9th inning. Nice set of arms here with a couple of question marks that could easily payoff though adding a closer would help.

Draft: Armed with the top pick, DSF would be hard pressed to pass on the Kevin Miatan with its first pick as he his tools look truly drool worthy. Finding a late-inning reliever would help solidify this team as well.

Prediction:
RD 1: Kevin Miatan (Atl - SS) - MCab comparisons are too strong to pass up at any age
RD 2: Eloy Jimenz (ChC - OF) - Strong chance he makes Cubs team out of ST
RD 3: Brandon Kintzler (Min - RP) - Many are saying that he'll be the Twins closer
RD 4: Corey Dickerson (TB-OF) - Young enough for a bounce back and cheap enough
RD 5: Lance Lynn (Stl - SP) - Rule-5 selection
RD 6: Michael Kopech (ChW - SP) - Keeper

Prospect Draft:
RD 1: Jose Almonte (Tex - OF)
RD 2: Wander Javier (Min - SS)
RD 3: Ronald Bolanos (SD - SP)
